Dr. R.S. Jhanji

Principal, A.S. College, Khanna

Academic and Professional Journey

Born and raised in Rajpura town of Punjab, Dr. R.S. Jhanji did his schooling from prestigious Punjab Public School, Nabha and graduated in 1984 from S.A. Jain College, Ambala affiliated to Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra. After achieving Master’s Degree in English from Punjabi University, Patiala in 1987, he researched on ‘Fiction Works of Arun Joshi’ and completed his M.Phil. Degree in 1988. His initial stints spanning five years (1989-1994) in premier institutions in Punjab and Haryana provided him the fusion of professional training with University education, a step towards the fulfillment of long-cherished dream of entering teaching profession since his graduation years. Later on, he worked as Lecturer for two years (July 1995-June 1997) at Shanti Tara College, Ahmedgarh and simultaneously handled the additional charge as the Officiating Principal of the college.
Consecutively, joined A.S. College, Khanna as a Lecturer in English in August 1997 and continued his research work in tandem with teaching work and other assignments and so earned his Doctorate Degree on ‘Marginality versus Centre Paradigms of Colonial Experience in the major Fiction of V.S. Naipaul’ in 2003 from Punjabi University, Patiala. On basis of his achievements and demonstrated success in teaching-learning, academics, research and corporate life of the institution, he was selected as the youngest ever Principal of this pre-independence College in March 2005 and is still continuing on this position. The professional experience, skills and significant shifts harnessed while navigating the professional journey of over 26 years affords him a rare opportunity to move forward and accept challenges of higher magnitude to contribute his best share in the field of Higher Education.

The academic career, teaching philosophy and pedagogical stance have been shaped under the influence of his mentors who always led by an example inside and outside the classroom. He is strongly of the opinion that a teacher must be fully devoted to the institution so that the desired graduate attributes are fully achieved and the students develop an ability to adequately assess, create, and articulate different ideas. In this context, the teaching of English as a Compulsory/Elective Subject has had been a challenging task in our institution where more than 50% students are ruralites from about 160 villages. After 25 years of college teaching as a Lecturer/Principal, he is still experimenting and working on new ideas for quality enhancement in UG/PG teaching. The students have always considered him as a positive, caring and dedicated teacher who is committed for the holistic development of his students. As an author/editor, Dr. Jhanji has contributed 06 Books and 12 papers in the area of English Literature, Human Security, Environmental Issues and Skill Development in Higher Education. He has attended many national and international conferences held in India and abroad.

As the Principal of the college since March 2005, he has made sincere efforts for achieving the goals of infrastructural development, horizontal & vertical enrichment of academic programmes, research and faculty development and integration of technology in teaching-learning process. In furtherance of ‘Innovative academic expansion’ the college took a lead to respond to the UGC scheme on ‘Skill Development based Higher Education’ notified by MHRD under National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF). The college developed curriculum for vocational programmes of B.Voc- Multimedia: Animation & Graphics and B.Voc- Banking, Insurance & Retailing in consultation with industry and educationists. UGC approved our proposal and sanctioned a grant of Rs. 1.46 crore. The vocational programmes with multiple exits have been started since 2014-2015. During this tenure, the institution successfully initiated 05 PG programmes (M.A. English in M.Sc-Mathematics in 2010, M.Sc-IT in 2012, M.Com & M.A-Economics in 2013) and 04 elective subjects (Sociology, Public Administration and Elective English in 2006 & Music in 2012). These courses have been started on the strong demand of parents, alumni, teachers and stakeholders.

Under his able leadership and guidance of the Management, the institution volunteered for Second Cycle of Accreditation by NAAC, Bangalore. The Peer Team constituted by NAAC visited the college on September 28-30, 2015 and assessed the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges of the institution with reference to Quality Sustenance and Enhancement. As a result of our joint efforts, scaling new heights and excellence in various academic and co-curricular domains, A.S. College, Khanna has been awarded ‘Grade A’ with CGPA of 3.51on a 4 Point Scale by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

Apart from the institutional administration, as a Member of the Syndicate and Senate (since 2008) of the Panjab University Chandigarh, Dr. Jhanji has been actively contributing in the analysis of various administrative/academic issues, concerns, policies and trends to determine the best recommended courses of action for upliftment of the University.
